A Glimpse into Γoumenissa’s History

Nestled at the southeastern foot of Mount Paiko in Central Macedonia, Goumenissa has a rich tapestry of history and tradition. Its roots trace back to ancient Paeonia, mentioned in Homer’s Iliad.

During Roman times, the town became part of Macedonia, and under Ottoman rule (1387–1912), it flourished as a center for silk, textiles, and fine wines.

Goumenissa was liberated during the Balkan Wars in 1912. Later, Greek refugees from Asia Minor and Eastern Rumelia settled here, enriching the cultural fabric with new traditions, crafts, and cuisine.
