Kolede is celebrated across Northern Greece and the neighboring Balkan regions, especially in areas from Florina to Thessaloniki. There, it is known as Koleda (Κόλιντα, Κόλιαντα) or Koleda Babo (Κόλιντα Μπάμπω), meaning “Koleda Grandmother” in Slavic. The celebration takes place in the days before Christmas, when villagers gather in the central square to light a large bonfire—a symbol of warmth, protection, and the coming festive season. The night continues with traditional music, lively dancing, and a joyful sense of community that brings everyone together.
