October in Goumenissa: New Trails and Authentic Greek Experiences

October brought a different kind of magic to Goumenissa — the crisp mountain air, the changing colors, and two extraordinary experiences that reminded me why I love sharing this place with others. From inaugurating new hiking trails in Northern Greece to welcoming travelers eager to explore authentic rural Greek culture, this month showcased the best of what Central Macedonia has to offer.

Inaugurating the Negoska Trail: Wine Hiking in Northern Greece

This October, we did something special: we inaugurated the Negoska Trail, a new hiking route that connects two of Goumenissa's beloved wineries through the vineyard landscapes that define this PDO wine region.

In partnership with OSPEG and Dimosthenis Guesthouse, we walked from Aidarinis Winery to Mikro Titos Winery, following a path that winds through vineyards, offers stunning views of Mount Paiko, and tells the story of our region's winemaking heritage. The trail takes its name from Negoska, one of the indigenous Greek grape varieties that makes Goumenissa's PDO wines so distinctive.

We were joined by a group from Thessaloniki — aspiring mountain guides learning their craft. There's something beautiful about sharing a trail's first official walk with people who understand the importance of paths, both literal and metaphorical. We paused along the way to share a glass of local wine, toasting to new beginnings and the trails that bring us together.

For anyone who loves combining hiking with wine tasting in Greece, the Negoska Trail offers an authentic experience in one of Northern Greece's most historic wine regions.

Group Tour from Athens: Exploring Central Macedonia's Hidden Treasures

Later in October, we welcomed a group of thirty visitors from Athens through Memnon Travel, and what an experience it was. Getting to know each person, hearing their stories, talking about Greek history and ancient civilizations — these are the moments that make cultural tourism so rewarding. We treated our guests to local specialties: Karioaka from Pipsos (a traditional Greek sweet that captures fall in every bite) and the original Tsoureki with chestnut cream.

The itinerary showcased the depth and diversity of Central Macedonia:

The Kilkis Cave, located on the hill of Agios Georgios, offered its mysterious beauty — formations carved by time and water that leave you in awe of nature's artistry.

The Archaeological Site of Europos, homeland of Seleucus, brought ancient history to life. Standing where others stood thousands of years ago, imagining the lives lived in this crossroads of civilizations.

The Monastery of Archangel Michael in Almopia revealed its spiritual beauty and peaceful atmosphere, a place where faith and history intertwine.

The Chrysalis Silk Factory told a different kind of history — the industrial heritage that once defined Goumenissa, the workers who filled these halls, the silk that traveled from here to the world.

And finally, the Chestnut Festival in Griva — autumn's most delicious celebration in Northern Greece. We also gave them a sneak peek into a kazani (more on that in our November highlights).

Thirty visitors, thirty different reasons for coming, thirty new connections to Goumenissa and the wider region of Central Macedonia. Some were history enthusiasts, others food lovers, many simply curious about this part of Greece they'd never visited before. By the end of their visit, all of them understood what makes rural Greece so special.

Why Visit Goumenissa in October

These two experiences — the trail inauguration and the Athens group cultural tour — represent what The Goumenissa Project is all about. It's not just showing people beautiful places (though this region of Northern Greece offers plenty of those). It's about creating moments of connection: with the land, with Greek history, with each other, and with traditions that still shape daily life here.

October reminded me that every season brings its own gifts for travelers. The hiking trails are perfect for walking. The chestnuts are ready for harvest and celebration. The wineries welcome visitors with the warmth that comes naturally to people who love what they do.
