September in Goumenissa: Where Every Visit Tells a Story
September brought us two incredible guests, each seeking something different, each leaving with unforgettable memories of rural Greece. Here's what happened when curiosity met authentic experience in Goumenissa.
Nancy's Creative Journey: Finding Beauty in History
When Belgian artist Nancy Taelman arrived, we knew she'd appreciate Goumenissa's layers of history and craft. What we didn't expect was how perfectly her skills would align with one of our community's treasures. We started gently—exploring local farmers markets where vendors still sell produce from their own gardens, wandering through vintage shops filled with objects that whisper stories of generations past. But it was at the old Xrysalis Silk Factory where Nancy truly came alive. With her experience cleaning and organizing old factory buildings, Nancy was in her element. While she worked as a volunteer, carefully tending to this piece of industrial heritage, you could see the connection between artist and history, between preservation and creativity. The silk factory, once the heartbeat of Goumenissa's economy, was being honored by hands that understood its value.
Planning your visit? Nancy's experience inspired us to add even more cultural depth to our itineraries. Next time, we're including visits to the stunning new Pella Museum and the therapeutic baths of Pozar in Aridea—because Goumenissa is your gateway to Northern Greece's hidden treasures.
Colleen's Harvest Adventure: Embracing the Mountains
"I want a real Greek rural experience," Colleen told us. So we took her straight to the heart of autumn in Greece: chestnut harvest season.
Picture this: the majestic Mount Paiko rising above you, morning light filtering through ancient trees, and the satisfying sound of chestnuts dropping into buckets. Colleen didn't just watch—she picked, collected, cleaned, and learned the entire process of preparing chestnuts for sale. Her hands told the story by day's end: tired, a bit sore, but deeply satisfied. That evening, we danced away the aches at a Pontian gathering at Aidarinis Winery. There's something magical about traditional music, local wine, and a community that welcomes strangers as friends. After a well-earned rest at Dimosthenis Guesthouse (where homemade jams and marmalade are just part of the morning magic), we continued the journey. The Duo Potamia waterfalls offered their cooling beauty, while Mikro Titos Winery shared the stories captured in every bottle. We drove through mountain roads where the air is so fresh and the views so vast, you remember what it means to breathe. Colleen left tired, yes—but alive in a way that only real experience can make you feel.
